How is the McGill Method different from traditional physiotherapy or chiropractic care?
The McGill Method is built around a precision assessment that focuses on the biomechanical, psychosocial, and ergonomic aspects of each client's pain. We search for your unique pain triggers and movement patterns. The typical result is lasting relief and a deeper knowledge of your body's unique strengths and weakness. About 20-30% of back-pain-sufferers require a more in-depth assessment, which is where the McGill Method comes in.
The method is not limited by the treatments that the practitioner is trained in. For example, the findings of the assessment may occasionally require the client to be referred to another health professional for further treatment and assessment (e.g., physiotherapists, chiropractors, massage therapists, physicians, etc.)
Can athletes benefit from the McGill Method?
Absolutely. Elite athletes worldwide use the McGill Method to recover from injury and enhance performance. It teaches you how to brace, move, and train in ways that protect your spine while building strength and resilience.
What types of back pain does the McGill Method treat?
The method effectively treats many types of mechanical back pain, including herniated discs, sciatica, SI joint issues, joint instability, and persistent low back pain. Your initial consultation will determine whether this approach is right for your specific condition.
Do I need a doctor's referral to see a physiotherapist or McGill Method practitioner?
No referral is necessary. In Ontario, physiotherapists are autonomous healthcare practitioners, which means you can book directly with us for assessment and treatment. It is possible that your private health insurance requires a physician referral.
Can physiotherapists diagnose my condition?
Yes. Physiotherapists in Ontario are trained and regulated to make physiotherapy diagnoses within our scope of practice. Through comprehensive assessment, we can identify musculoskeletal injuries, movement dysfunctions, and physical impairments that are affecting your health and performance.
We diagnose conditions such as muscle strains, ligament sprains, tendinopathies, joint dysfunctions, postural disorders, cardiopulmonary functional limitations, neurological impairments, and biomechanical issues. Our diagnosis focuses on understanding how your body moves, what's causing your pain or limitation, and what treatment approach will be most effective.
If during your assessment we identify concerns that require medical investigation or imaging, we'll guide you on the appropriate next steps and coordinate with other healthcare providers as needed.
What should I expect during my first appointment?
Your first session includes a thorough interview and movement assessment to identify pain triggers and faulty movement patterns. From there, we develop a customized strategy to eliminate pain and build strength. Most clients leave with immediate improvements and a clear plan forward.
Is your nutrition screening and consultation covered by insurance?
Yes, some Ontario Health Insurance plans, such as Manulife, do cover Registered Orthomolecular Health Practitioners (ROHP). Please contact your insurance provider to determine whether this specific service is covered by your plan.
